The body of former President Jimmy Carter has been flown from his home state of Georgia to Washington, D.C., as part of a state funeral for the late president. The body of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, who was laid to rest at the Carter Center for public viewing, was flown to the Washington area on Tuesday aboard Special Air Mission 39.

Former President Carter’s family and former presidents welcomed him at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Then, his casket, draped in an American flag, was carried by a motorcade to the US Navy Memorial. From there, his casket was carried by horse-drawn carriage to the US Capitol.

The late former President Carter was the only U.S. president to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy and become president. His body will lie in state in the Capitol, where lawmakers will pay their respects late Tuesday.
