POSCO INTERNATIONAL TO CONSTRUCT DRIVING MOTOR CORE PLANTS IN POLAND,
After assuming office, the newly appointed president of POSCO International, Lee Gye-in, has opted for the global expansion of the driving motor core division as his first move.
POSCO International approved the construction of a new driving motor core plant in Poland and a second plant in Mexico during its board meeting on Feb. 23, thereby finalizing the blueprint for the “2030 Era of Driving Motor Core Production with 7 Million Units.”
With this move, the company has established a global production cluster for driving motor cores spanning five countries, including South Korea, Mexico, Poland, China, and India.
The production plant in Poland, which will serve as a gateway for the driving motor core business in Europe, is set to be located in Brzeg, in southwestern Poland. Brzeg is considered an advantageous location for local procurement as it is adjacent to production bases of global automotive companies in Europe, such as Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.
The groundbreaking for the new plant, which will be built on 100,000 square meters of land, is scheduled for June of this year, and construction is anticipated to be completed by May 2025. According to production plans, the factory will expand its capacity, aiming to achieve an annual production capacity of 1.2 million units of driving motor cores by 2030.
POSCO International plans to stabilize factory operations by initiating the production of 1.03 million units of driving motor cores, a contract received from Hyundai Motor Company in January, and further pursuing orders from key European clients.
During the board meeting on the same day, the construction of the second factory in Mexico was also approved along with the Poland plant. The construction is set to commence in May of this year, aiming for completion by March of next year. Located near the first factory completed in Ramos Arizpe in October of last year, once the second factory in Mexico is completed, a combined annual production capacity of 2.5 million units will be achieved from the two factories by 2030.
In particular, the second factory in Mexico will serve as an essential production base to meet the supply demand of 2.72 million driving motor cores contracted with Hyundai Motor Group Meta Plant America (HMGMA) in September of last year, as well as to address the local production demands of North American clients.
